Every Step Forward

step-by-step-blog

In my last post, I had just returned from my Ali Brown, Millionaire Protege Retreat, where I had gone   looking for ways to grow my business.  And I came home with the realization I needed to focus on my health first and foremost or it wouldn’t matter what I did with my business, because I would be dead.   I set a plan to focus first on my health every day and I began in earnest and then like so many other good intentions, I started letting it slip away.  I was focusing on my health, just not making the time necessary to improve it.

In April, I also attended the four day Direct Selling Women’s Alliance event in Los Angeles and met so many great entrepreneurs.  One of the panelists, Suzan, shared that she had a morning call every Monday through Friday with the top people on her team to get everyone motivated for the day.  For some reason, this really resonated with me and I committed to her I would implement a similar program within one week.  I did not know what or who the group would involve; I just really liked the idea.  And within a few days, The Healthy Breakfast Club was born!

Now, less than one month later, we have over 60 members which are committed to achieving and/or maintaining a healthy body weight.  And the method we have chosen is to eat healthy well balanced meals and work out regularly.  No magic pills or machines, no fad diets,  no short term solutions.  The HBC is about making permanent life style changes to improve the quality of our lives and the quantity of years we have to live it.

Every weekday morning Monday through Friday, we convene our meeting on the phone from 7-7:30 AM PDT for thirty-ish minutes.  The focus on the call is always positive and celebrating each successful step we take.  Club members call in from all over the country to support, encourage, and motivate each other and miracles are happening.   With support, the members are achieving wonderful results.  Becky ran her first 5K yesterday, Suzzane has stopped eating after 7:30, Carra is working out every day, and this is my 10th day straight without any diet soda.  And for me that is a personal miracle.  I know my addiction to diet soda (and lots of it daily) was the MOST unhealthy habit in my life.  And it has been for 25 years.  At my worst, I would consume two 64 ounce Super Big Gulps of diet coke in one day.   An average was at least one 42 ounce diet coke from McDonalds and and I love when they put them on sale.

I am a smart girl and I know the chemicals and the artificial sweeteners were horrible for me and there was not a shred of nutritional value and yet I kept drinking.  Sometimes I would wake up in the morning and have leftover coke on my nightstand, warm and flat, and it would be the first thing I would drink.  My twins, Patrick and Dylan have asked me for years to please stop drinking diet soda and even for them I could not do it.  Dylan and I made an agreement that he would not eat meat if I would not drink diet soda and that lasted for about two days.  Most mortifying of all was then I found my self sneak drinking diet soda so he would not find out.  How addicted is that?

A week ago Friday, the goal I set for the weekend to my club members was to be aware of and track how much diet soda I consumed over the weekend.  No where did I even allude to the fact that I intended to not drink any – only to track and be aware.  This was on a Friday morning and I worked at home all day until Kevin got home.  And then we set off to Monterey to visit our son Patrick, who the week before had graduated Navy Boot Camp and was now at the Defense Language Institute for the next two years perfecting his Chinese!  On the way up, we stopped at Whole Foods in Thousand Oaks for dinner.  If you have ever been to one, you know they do not even sell diet soft drinks.  For the first time in my life (I swear) I BOUGHT a bottle of water to drink with dinner.  And off we went.

It was not until we went to lunch on Saturday that I realized I had not had any diet soda since at least Thursday.  Hmmmm and I was still alive and not thrashing about or biting any-one’s head off, so I made a decision to finish out the day without any and I did.  Here it is over a week later and I honestly feel I have ‘kicked the habit’.  In fact, I am already making plans to give up the next most unhealthy thing in my diet at the 30 day mark.

Was it easy?  No.  Was it as hard as I thought it would be.  No, which was kind of disappointing as I thought the more I suffered, the more I could pat myself on the back for succeeding.  Sheeshhh…talk about self punishment.  I began posting on Facebook my progress every single day and the members of The Healthy Breakfast Club rallied around in support and encouragement, as well as other friends onFacebook who are not members.  The support and cheer-leading was what inspired me every day to ‘just say no’ to diet soda.

Every step I take and you take brings us all one step closer to achieving our goals.  What step will you take today?

Purpose, Persistence and Patience

Week two of The Healthy Breakfast Club kicked off with several new club members and lots of great success stories.  Each of us had set a healthy intention for the weekend and everyone shared their results.  My intention was to do one Beachbody DVD workout over the weekend.  And at 7:30 on Sunday evening I did Workout #1 of P90X (Chest and Back) for a modified 25 minutes and I was so excited.  Without the call this morning, I am sure I would have found some way to rationalize not doing it.  With the call, not only did I do it; my husband joined me in the workout. I can not begin to tell you how excited I was at the end…  Starting out though my heart rate was already up because I was nervous about “trying” it.  I watched the infomercial Tony, Traci and Doug did last week on QVC and that is what gave me the courage.  I have always looked at P90X as the workout other, already fit people did and nothing I would ever be able to aspire to.  On the infomercial Tony showed one of the moves (very difficult looking for me) and then he showed the modified version.  I looked at that and said I could do that!

How often are we creating limitations about our abilities in our mind which have no basis or evidence in fact?  And how does that hold us back?  Was pretty silly of me to decide I could not do a program, no matter what, when I had never even opened the package.  Duh!  Hello….Give your self a chance to see what you can do.  In your exercise, your eating, your business, your relationships and the rest of your life – what could you be doing right now, you don’t “think” you could do?  Push the envelope at least a little and take a chance.

Suzanne shared on the call the way she thinks of exercise time is like recess.  The time we get to take a break and go out to play!!!  Changing how we think about something can very simply change the way we feel about it and the actions we take.  Thanks, Suzanne!

We have lots of experience and a wealth of knowledge in our club members.  Today I was excited to have Judy Javislak, one of the great coaches on my Beach Body Team share the following topic:

Purpose, Persistence and Patience

Healthy living is all about adding several good habits into our lives.  How do we add these good habits and make them STICK?  It’s all about PURPOSE, PERSISTENCE, and PATIENCE.  PURPOSE is all about getting in touch with all of the wonderful things we can have in our lives if we adopt this new good habit.  Think about them, make a list, but most importantly…DREAM!  Visualize having all of these good things in your life!  The next step is PERSISTENCE.  Challenges will come up, but it is important to keep moving forward.  For example, when you don’t feel like exercising, just get started with 10 minutes.  Tell yourself that you can quit after 10 minutes.  Sometimes you’ll exceed that 10 minutes because you start to feel good.  Other times, it will just be 10 minutes, and that’s okay!  The secret to success is to NEVER give up!  Finally, PATIENCE is important too!  It’s been said that something done over and over every day will become a habit after around 21 days.  That’s a good start, but it isn’t some magic number.  Keep going until one day you realize that it’s a habit.  Then, start over with your PURPOSE again.  Sometimes you will need to readjust your purpose as your life changes.  But that’s the FUN part of it!  Human nature is such that we are always trying to learn and grow!  Just think how boring life would be if there was nothing new to learn!

Tomorrow we have a special guest I will be interviewing and you do not want to miss the call.  Invite people you know by going towww.thehealthybreakfastclub.com and signing up.  Ask them to be sure to fill in the spot “invited by” as we want to honor the coaching relationships in place.  Your personal Beachbody Coach (or the coach who invited you) can answer any questions you man have and support you on a one on one level.

Until tomorrow, keep pushing play!

The Perfection Expectation

The first week of The Healthy Breakfast Club was amazing to say the least.  The sharing, the caring, the bonding, the vulnerability, the support, the totally wonderful feeling is wonderful.  If you have not joined us yet, please do.  We are developing a great core group and we have lots of special things planned for next week (including a very special guest speaker on Tuesday.)

T0day we talked about the “Perfection Expectation” and how it can negatively impact our weight loss/fitness goals.  You know the story and an example of would go like this.  It is Wednesday and you have been making great food choices all week long.  Sometime, in the afternoon you choose to make a choice which was not in your plan.  Therefore, the whole week is ruined  and you wait until the following Monday to start all over again.  Sound familiar?  Been there, done that?  I know I have many, many, many times.

This comes out of an expectation anything less than perfection is unacceptable.  WRONG!  Have you heard of the 80/20 rule?  It says if you make correct decisions 80% of the time, you are always moving in the correct direction; exactly where you want to be going.   With Optifast I lost 150 pounds in 10 months and never ever went off the program.  I had not one bit of food for the entire time, not one bite!  What did I learn about healthy, balanced eating? Nothing.  Looking back I am sure I totally messed up my metabolism, by consuming 400 calories a day for 10 m0nths.  And gaining more than the 150 pounds I lost back again, could not have been too good for me either.

I want to share a definition for “perfect” from the dictionary I like.  “Lacking nothing essential to the whole; compete of its nature or kind.” All of us is whole and complete just the way we are.  Striving consistently for excellence  is a much better choice than the unattainable goal of  reaching for perfection.

Excellence is willing to be wrong.  Perfection is being right.

Excellence is risk.  Perfection is fear.

Excellence is powerful.  Perfection is anger and frustration.

Excellence is spontaneous.  Perfection is control.

Excellence is accepting.  Perfection is judgment.

Which do you choose?

To Your Health,

Judi

Green Smoothie – A Glass of Fresh!

Thanks go to Suzanne for sharing her recipe for the Spinach/Ginger Shake and I have pasted her entire blog post here!

Yes, that is what Oprah called this drink when Dr. Oz prepared it for her on air! ***

Most mornings I throw together one of these super nutritious, refreshing drinks.  I know that I’ve gotten my day off to a great start without a lot of preparation.

Ingredients:

2 or more cups of spinach
1 1/2 cups water
about a square inch of fresh ginger, peeled
1 Tablespoon of Flax Oil
2 level scoops of Aria (powdered supplement of blended soy and whey protein)
1/2 scoop of BerrySplash, mixed berry powdered drink mix with Acai Berry
1 Tablespoon of L-Glutamine Amino Acid
1 scoop of Green Defense, super green foods powder

Directions:

Put spinach and chopped, peeled ginger into the blender.
Pout in the water.
Cover the blender.
Blend on high until the spinach and ginger are liquefied.
Add Flax Oil, Aria, BerrySplash, L-Glutamine, and Green Defense
Blend in 2 or 3 ice cubes…more if you want your drink more frozen

This is a way of getting mega nutrients into your body to support you when you are going through stressful times such as having Alzheimer’s in the Family with a parent or other loved one with the disease. I won’t go into all the amazing benefits of the ingredients right now. Another time I’ll talk about that.

It’s important to have equipment that makes creating the smoothie effortless.  I use an Osterizer blender. What I have now is their 12-speed blender. This is an amazingly powerful blender. I’ve been doing daily shakes with this one for several years and it is still going strong. I have noticed that the bottom of the glass container where the mechanism is may be leaking….wearing out a bit. Rather than checking into getting a new part….usually a tedious process, I am purchasing a new one….

I’ve chosen the Osterizer 14-speed blender. The 12-speed doesn’t seem to be readily available. I’m confident that this one will be as good…and even better than the 12-speed. I found it online at walmart.com. It came up on Google and the price is incredible…$24.88 and is available with their Site to Store with no shipping.

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=3946735

When you compare this blender to various prestige ones on the the web costing hundreds of dollar, I recommend this one. I’ve been very satisfied with the performance and durability. Other typical blenders just don’t handle this type of blending job as well. Having the glass container is a plus also.

*** In case you’re interested in Dr. Oz’s recipe from the Oprah show, here it is:

· 2 cups spinach
· 2 cups cucumber
· 1 head of celery
· 1/2 inch or teaspoon ginger root
· 1 bunch parsley
· 2 apples
· Juice of 1 lime
· Juice of 1/2 lemon

I prefer not to use fresh fruits in my smoothies…. I prefer eating good fruit without pulverizing it!
Some other items I’ve heard of people adding are: kale, beet greens, collards, stevia, bananas, frozen mixed berries.

Another day I’ll share a drink recipe I make with mixed frozen fruit.
